15 July 2007:
Lady Cathcart's House. The shop on the ground floor was for many years McNair's butchers. We were registered there for our meat rations during the war.

Dansarena, Ayr. In its last use as a church, it was indeed Cathcart Church but originally it was the New Church, the 'New Kirk' built in the 1650s having by then become the 'Auld Kirk'. Cathcart Church was originally the building on the other side of Fort Street and the congregation moved across the road when the New Church congregation merged, I think, with the Auld Kirk. I can remember in the thirties Cathcart Church Hall being built in Cathcart Street adjacent to the church and the masonry gates were then built there, leading to a courtyard between the church and hall. The hall was used as a temporary sorting office at Christmas for some years, 1942 and 1943 to my personal knowledge.

The West Kirk. Now alas a branch of J D Wetherspoon, this was always known as Sandgate Church. I think that was not just a colloquialism but its formal name.
