The second smallest of Scotland's unitary authorities, Clackmannanshire lies in central Scotland between the River Forth to the south and the Ochil Hills to the north. It is traversed by the River Devon and was until the 1960s a centre of coal mining, heavy engineering and textile manufacture. Today its chief towns, which include Alloa, Clackmannan, Alva, Tillicoultry and Dollar, are centres of brewing, distilling and the manufacture of textiles and glassware.
