England invades Scotland

1296

King Edward I invades Scotland and annexes the country to the English crown, giving rise to the succeeding Wars of Independence. Edward steals Scotland's Coronation Stone - the "Stone of Destiny" or "Stone of Scone" - which was removed to Westminster Abbey (in London). The stone was temporarily repatriated in 1950 and permanently returned to Edinburgh Castle in 1996.
