Second Blantyre Mining Disaster

1879

A second mining disaster hit the community of Blantyre when, on 2nd July 1879, another underground explosion in High Blantyre No.1 Pit killed twenty-eight miners. This followed Scotland's worst mining tragedy which occurred here two years previously, when 207 were killed. A large granite memorial commemorates both events.
