The Royal Scottish Geographical Society was founded in 1884 by a group led by John George Bartholomew (1860 - 1920), the Edinburgh cartographer, which included Professor James Geikie (1839 - 1914) and Mrs A.L. Bruce, the daughter of explorer David Livingstone.
