QE2 launched

The Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) was launched at Clydebank (West Dunbartonshire), 6 miles (10 km) west of Glasgow. Built at John Brown's yard, she was the last of the great Clyde-built passenger liners. The ship was named in honour of her predecessor, the liner Queen Elizabeth, not the monarch who launched her. The ship measures 293m (963 feet) in length and weighs 70327 tons. Owned and operated by the Cunard Line, she completed 5.9 million nautical miles whilst in service, completing 25 world cruises, crossing the Atlantic 804 times and carried 2.5 million passengers. The ship completed a final tour in 2008, visiting Greenock on the Clyde, before retiring to become a floating hotel in Dubai.
