The name Cockburn originates from the Borders, but it is uncertain whether it derives from the English name Colbrand or from the Cuckooburn area near Roxburgh. The Cockburn family came into the possession of the Langton estate after the Battle of Bannockburn.
The original clan chieftain's line was broken when the estate and barony were sold. The buyer was a cousin of the chief who became a baronet in his own right in 1671.
