MacGowan

(McGowan, Smith)

MacGowan comes from the Gaelic Mac Ghobhainn or son of the Smith, being a worker of metal (usually a blacksmith, but also coppersmiths, swordsmiths, buckle-makers and so forth). As such every clan must have had its MacGhobhainn, although they appear in their own right as a small clan in Nithsdale (Dumfries and Galloway). There are particular associations with Whithorn.

Otherwise, the MacGowans are associated with the MacDonald and MacPherson clans.
