Meaning simply 'son of James', this name has some associations with the Stewart Kings, of whom there were seven James', but equally James was a common name in mediaeval Scotland.

Notable members of this family include the portrait painter John Jameson (1586 - 1644), the Reverend John Jamieson (1759 - 1836) and the naturalist Robert Jameson (1774 - 1854).
