Moffat

Spero Meliora (I hope for Better Things)

A borders family who gave their name to the town of Moffat (Dumfries and Galloway). The name is thought to be of Norse origin, which may have come to Scotland in the 10th Century.

Nicholas de Moffet was the Bishop of Glasgow in 1268. Other noted members of the family were missionary and explorer Dr. Robert Moffat (1795 - 1883) and ecclesiastical historian Prof. James Moffatt (1870 - 1944).
