Old Kirk, Balquhidder

Located immediately to the south of the present Balquhidder Parish Church, which was built in 1855, the Old Kirk is a roofless yew-shaded ruin, which provides a romantic backdrop to the grave of Rob Roy MacGregor.

It was built in 1631 by David Murray, Lord Scone, and reconstructed in 1774. The church is the burial place of the Chiefs of the Clan MacLaren and it was the A.R. & K.M. MacLaren Trust which stabilised and conserved the structure in 1997, with assistance from Historic Scotland.

A kirkyard with stones dating back to the 17th C. surround the Old Kirk. These include a memorial to George Boyle, 4th Earl of Glasgow, and the grave of the Carnegies of Stronvar. It was David Carnegie of Stronvar who gave the present church to the parish.
