Dalriada

An ancient kingdom in the W Highlands, Dalriada extended over an area roughly equivalent to modern Argyll and Bute. It was established in the early 5th century by the Scots from Ireland with major centres at Dunadd and Dunstaffnage. Kenneth I, 36th king of Dalriada, moved his capital to Scone to escape the Viking raids and, according to legend, took with him the ancestral enthroning-stone blessed by St Patrick known as the Stone of Destiny. In 843 AD Kenneth MacAlpin united the kingdoms of the Scots and Picts to the north of the Clyde and Forth.
