Roan Island

(Eilean nan Ron)

An uninhabited island on the north coast of Sutherland, Roan (Gael: Eilean nan Ron) lies just to the east of the mouth of Tongue Bay, 4½ miles (7 km) northwest of Bettyhill and 6 miles (10 km) northeast of Tongue. The island is just over a mile (1.7 km) in length and rises steeply to 76m (249 feet). Formerly populated, the island is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with its rocky shore supporting a breeding colony of grey seals each Autumn.

The smaller islands of Eilean Iosal and Meall Holm (or Meall Thailm) lie immediately to the northwest.
