Barns of Airlie Earth House

One of the best preserved souterrains of Angus, the Barns of Airlie Earth House lies to the east of the River Isla, a half-mile (1 km) west of Kirkton of Airlie and 4½ miles (7 km) northeast of Alyth. Unusually, the roof remains in place over a gallery which is 19m (62 feet) in length, up to 2m (6½ feet) wide and 1.8m (6 feet) in height. Dating from the 1st or 2nd century AD, the intact nature of this structure give archaeologists the opportunity to understand the details of construction.
