Edin's Hall

Located on the northeasterly slopes of Cockburn Law, 1½ miles (2.5 km) southeast of Abbey St. Bathans in the Scottish Borders, Edin's Hall is a remarkable structure. It comprises the substantial remains of Iron-Age broch, unusual away from the far north or west of Scotland, which was built within the ramparts of earlier hill fort. Built in the 1st or 2nd century AD, the thick walls of the broch rise to 2m (6½ feet) in height in parts, and include an entrance passage, with associated guard chambers, traces of a flagstone floor and the base of a stone staircase which may have provided access to a raised wooden platform. The surrounding hill fort comprises a set of concentric ramparts surrounding the remains of huts and other structures. The Whiteadder Water flows past the site in a steep-sided wooded valley to the north.
