Balnakeil Bay

A sizeable bay of NW Sutherland, Balnakeil Bay lies at the mouth of the Kyle of Durness, between Cape Wrath and Loch Eriboll 1¼ miles (2 km) northwest of Durness. The eastern shore of the bay is formed by the dune-covered peninsula of Faraid Head. A storm in 1991 uncovered a 9th C. Viking burial here that was subsequently excavated revealing a number of objects lying alongside the skeleton, including fourteen gaming pieces fashioned from bone, an iron spear-head, knife and fish-hook, an antler comb, and a copper brooch and pendant.
