Rait Castle

An unusual ruined 13th-century hall house, Rait Castle lies on the edge of the Laiken Forest, 2½ miles (4 km) south southeast of Nairn. It was built by the de Rait family and later held by the Cummings, Mackintoshes and Campbells of Cawdor. The Duke of Cumberland is said to have stayed here before defeating the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
