Shieldaig Island

A small wooded island, Shieldaig Island is located in Loch Shieldaig, between Loch Torridon and Upper Loch Torridon, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) west of Shieldaig. It is densely covered by mature trees - primarily Scots Pine - believed to have been planted in the 1870s to provide poles for drying fishing nets and masts for ships.

The island been the property of the National Trust for Scotland since 1970, and is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with a thriving bird population, including black guillemots, heron, kestrels, long-eared owls and mergansers. Landing is only possible with permission.
