Glen Valtos

(Gleann Bhaltois)

A small but pronounced valley in the Uig district of W Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Glen Valtos (Gael: Gleann Bhaltois) connects Miavaig with Timsgarry. The B8011 road passes along the valley floor, as does the Abhainn a' Ghlinne which descends along the 1½ miles (2.5 km) length of the valley to fall into Loch Miavaig. Geomorphologically, the valley represents the particularly well-preserved remains of a glacial meltwater channel, formed during the melting of an ice-sheet located just to the west in Late Devensian times (around 14,000 years ago).
