Tahay

(Taghaigh)

The most conspicuous and one of the largest of a number of uninhabited islands lying to the northeast of North Uist, Tahay (Gael: Taghaigh) lies 4½ miles (7 km) northeast of Lochmaddy. The island extends to 53 ha (131 acres) and rises to 65m (213 feet). It was occupied briefly in the mid-19th century but proved unable to sustain its population.
