Rossie School

Located on a large rural campus on the slopes of Ginshot Hill in the centre of Rossie Moor, Rossie School lies 4 miles (6.5 km) southwest of Montrose and represents a small secure unit for the accommodation, care and education of children and young people sent there by the courts.

Founded in 1857 as the Rossie Reformatory School to cater for young offenders, it was later known as the Rossie Farm School, putting 100 miscreant boys to work on 202 ha (500 acres) of farmland with the aim of providing a training in agriculture. In 1962, the first secure unit for children in the UK was established here and by the mid 1980s the agricultural training centre had closed. Today the establishment serves as a national resource run by an independent Trust and managed by a Board of Governors, providing 24 places in secure accommodation and 4 places in open accommodation.
