Loch Risay

(Loch Riosaigh)

An inlet in East Loch Roag in the Outer Hebrides, Loch Risay (Gael: Loch Riosaigh) lies on the northeast coast of Great Bernera, a half-mile (1 km) east of Breasclete. This sealoch contains a number of islets, together with a restored Norse water-mill on its western shore and a uniquely-large lobster pond to the east. This was constructed in the early 1860s and used until the 1960s. It comprises a curved dam built across the mouth of a natural inlet to the south of Aird Mor, which retains sea water providing a suitable environment for storing lobsters caught in Loch Roag. Lobsters can be kept alive for several months until they could command the best prices at market. The pond was the work of Murdo Morrison, a local fisherman, who spent two years working in Australia to make enough money for its construction.
