Despite their name, the Nine Stanes comprise a group of only eight stones which lie on the southeast facing slope of Nine Stone Rig above the Kingside Burn in East Lothian. They are located a half-mile (1 km) north of the B6355 road and 1½ miles (2.5 km) northwest of Whiteadder Reservoir, with a line of pylons running close to the southeast.
The stones probably form the remains of a stone circle, estimated at approx. 6.5m (21 feet) in diameter and are generally large, and of varied profile, although now arranged in a far from classic circle.
