South Leith

That part of the district and former burgh of Leith in NW Edinburgh which lies to the south and east of the Water of Leith. South Leith was the larger of two settlements on opposite sides of the river (the other being North Leith), and most of Leith's oldest remaining buildings are to be found here. Part of the Barony of Restalrig, its wealth was based on trade and the area was characterised by narrow lanes with merchant's house and warehouses. Several of these lanes remain between the later wider streets.
