A much-altered tower house, Auchness Castle lies a half-mile (1 km) south of Ardwell on the Rhins of Galloway, to the west of Luce Bay. Dating from around 1600 and comprising three storeys and a garret, with crow-stepped gables, it was the property of the MacDouall family. It was converted into a farmhouse in the 19th century, with enlarged windows and dummy angle-turrets, and remains occupied.
