Ring of Brodgar, The

An impressive prehistoric stone circle lying between the Lochs of Stenness and Harray on Mainland Orkney, the Ring of Brodgar originally comprised 60 stones set six degrees apart starting from geographical north. Only 36 stones now remain in position within the confines of a deep ditch broken by two opposing causeways. Thought to have been a lunar observatory, its construction is likely to date from before 1500 BC.

The Ring of Brodgar is recognised as part of the Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, which was designated in 1999.
