The Wig

A bay on the east coast of the Rhins of Galloway, The Wig faces into Loch Ryan a half-mile (1 km) southeast of Kirkcolm. The bay contains the Wig Sands and extends for a half-mile (1 km) from Marian Port in the southwest to a small spit, known as The Scar, in the northeast. Sunderland flying boats flew from here in defence of convoys during World War II and much evidence of the base, known as RAF Wig Bay, still exists.
