Scatsta Airport

Located some 24 miles (39 km) NNW of Lerwick and 5 miles (8 km) southwest of the oil terminal at Sullom Voe, Scatsta Airport has the International Air Transport Association (IATA) location code "SCS". It was developed from 1939 as a Royal Air Force base for flying-boat operations. Abandoned after World War II, it was reinstated in 1978 for civilian use in support of the oil industry. The airport grew in importance when much of the oil traffic transferred here from Sumburgh Airport in 1999. A busy heliport transports staff to production platforms on the Brent and Ninian fields, and to the new fields West of Shetland.
