Overview of Dudhope Castle

Dudhope Castle, one of Dundee's oldest buildings, is set dramatically on an escarpment overlooking the city, beneath the Dundee Law. The original house was built in the 13th Century as the home of the Scrymgeour family, who were appointed Hereditary Constables of Dundee by William Wallace. The original building was replaced around 1460 and then by the current structure in 1580.

In 1683, both the castle and the office of Hereditary Constable were acquired by John Graham of Claverhouse, Bonnie Dundee, the Jacobite commander who died at the Battle of Killiecrankie.

The castle was used as a barracks between 1796 and 1881, and shortly thereafter was purchased by Dundee Town Council, who made the estate a public park. The castle has been used for various cultural and community purposes, most recently being refurbished to become the Dundee Business School of the University of Abertay.
