Sheriffmuir Battlefield

A desolate moor on the northwest facing western edge of the Ochil Hills, Sheriffmuir lies some 2½ miles (4 km) ENE of Dunblane and 4 miles (6 km) NNE of Bridge of Allan, in Stirling Council Area. In November 1715 an indecisive battle was fought here between the Jacobites under the Earl of Mar and government forces led by the Duke of Argyll who was determined to prevent the Jacobites reaching the River Forth. Despite the Jacobites' greater numbers, Mar was forced to retreat to Perth, losing many Highlanders who deserted en route. While the government force suffered greater casualties, the Jacobites never recovered momentum and the Rebellion crumbled. Still visible are the great burial mounds and a Gathering Stone from where the powerful Duke of Argyll is said to have watched the opposing Jacobite army gather.
