Ancrum Moor

Located at the side of the A68 road, 2 miles (3 km) north of the village of Ancrum and 2½ miles (4 km) southeast of St Boswells, Ancrum Moor is the site of a battle between the Scots and the English in 1544. Here Archibald Douglas, the 6th Earl of Angus (1489 - 1557), routed a much larger English army under Sir Ralph Evers and Sir Brian Latoun, who were both left dead on the field of combat. The fight followed the burning of Melrose and its abbey, at the heart of Douglas' territory.
