Ben Cruachan

A massive granite mountain of Argyll and Bute, Ben Cruachan rises to a height of 1126m (3694 feet) 4 miles (6 km) east of Bonawe, between Loch Etive and Loch Awe. The name Ben Cruachan is derived from the Gaelic for "stacky hill". It is of classic mountain form with four ridges culminating in a sharp peak. The main ridge running east to west is littered with boulders. Within the mountain, a hydro-electric power station pumps water from Loch Awe to the Cruachan Reservoir, which is enclosed in the southern corrie.
