Weisdale

A district and valley of the Central Mainland of Shetland, Weisdale lies at the head of Weisdale Voe which receives the Burn of Weisdale. The centre of the community lies 11 miles (17 km) north of Lerwick. Formerly a crofting area, it was transformed in the 1970s by North Sea oil housing at Kalliness. Weisdale was the birthplace in 1786 of John Clunies Ross who became 'king' of the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean. At Kergord near the head of the voe stands the largest plantation of trees in the Shetland Islands.
