The Necropolis, Glasgow
©2011 Gazetteer for Scotland
Located across the Molendinar valley from the Cathedral and Royal Infirmary sits The Necropolis, Glasgow's answer to the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. The foundation stone was laid in 1833. The tombs and headstones are an indication of the varied styles used; Greek meets Roman, Egyptian, Italian, Moorish and Gothic. Most of Glasgow's great architects are represented here; the work of Thomson, Wilson, Baird, Bryce, Hamilton and Rochead all occupy sites within the cemetery.
