A tall 15th C. cross now awkwardly situated next to the A74 (M) motorway, the Merkland Cross lies a mile (1.5 km) southeast of Kirtlebridge and 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Kirkpatrick Fleming. Why it was erected is not known, although various theories exist. It may have been a memorial to a long-forgotten military commander who died on this spot or simply the locus for a market or regular meeting-place.
The cross is now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
