Garbh Rhisa

(Garbh Rèisa)

An uninhabited island in the Sound of Jura, Garbh Rhisa (also Garbh Rèisa) is located a quarter-mile (0.5 km) south of Craignish Point. Rising to 45m (147 feet) at a point marked by a cairn in the north of the island, it extends to 17 ha (41 acres) and is composed of ancient metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rocks crossed by a Tertiary dyke. The island is one of several hereabouts noted for its unusual population of water vole (Arvicola amphibius). These animals are thought to be descended from a pregnant female swept from the mainland, now unable to live in the typical riverside habitat.
