Penwhirn Reservoir

A reservoir of W Galloway, Penwhirn was established on the course of the Penwhirn Burn in the 1950s to supply drinking water to Stranraer and district. It is located between Diddles Hill and Mark Hill, 3 miles (5 km) east of Cairnryan and 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Stranraer. It is operated by Scottish Water for the supply of drinking-water and covers an area of 72.2 ha (178 acres). An associated filter station lies below the earth embankment dam, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) to the east. The reservoir supports a recreational fishery for brown trout.
