Handa

(Handa Island)

An uninhabited island separated from the northwest coast of Sutherland by the Sound of Handa, Handa (also known as Handa Island) lies north of the village of Scourie and is accessed by a regular summer boat service from Tarbet. With an area of 309 ha (764 acres), the island is a designated nature reserve in the care of the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Its dramatic Torridonian sandstone cliffs in the north rise sheer from the Atlantic, providing nesting sites for seabird colonies that are the largest in NW Europe.
