Ewe

(Island of Loch Ewe, Isle of Ewe)

The Isle of Ewe is located in Loch Ewe, a half-mile (1 km) west of the settlement of Aultbea on the west coast of the Ross and Cromarty district of Highland Council. Covering an area of 309 ha (764 acres) it reaches a high point of 72m (236 feet) at the cliff of Creag Streap on the island's northwest coast. Once a forested island, it was also home to a naval base during the Second World War. Although naval activity still occurs in the waters around the island, the island itself has now been turned over to farming. Its population has proved relatively stable: 10 (1961), 10 (1971), 11 (1981), 12 (1991), 12 (2001) and 7 (2011).
