Gruinard Island

Gruinard Island sits in Gruinard Bay on the west coast of Ross and Cromarty in Highland Council area and covers an area of 196 ha (484 acres). The uninhabited island was chosen as the test site for germ warfare tests carried out during the Second World War. A series of bombs which contained anthrax were dropped on the island in 1942, the sheep population quickly died and the island was infected. After a period of 45 years, it was cleaned and deemed safe to visit.
