Surrounding the 18th century Ardwell House, 3 miles (5 km) south of Sandhead on the South Rhins of Galloway, Ardwell Gardens represent a beautiful combination of formal and informal gardens which are open to the public. A walled garden dates from c.1800 and now grows a large variety of summer bedding plants and produce. Nearby, the statue of an owl (1872) is the work of John Rhind.
The gardens include a large variety of azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons.
