An enormous manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Dundee, the Michelin Tyre Plant is located on a 28 ha (70 acre) site at Baldovie, 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Broughty Ferry and 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Dundee city centre. The plant opened in 1972, following an extended search by the French-based Michelin company for a Scottish site, and began producing radial tyres for cars.
The plant is now perhaps better known for hosting what was the UK's largest corporate wind energy project when commissioned in 2006. Two 2-megawatt (MW) wind turbines were built within the site, each mounted on a 85m (278 feet) base and with three blades of 71m (232 feet) diameter. The turbines generate approximately a third of the energy requirements of the tyre plant.
