Inverclyde Royal HospitalA large general hospital located in Greenock, 2 miles (3 km) west of the town centre and a mile (1.5 km) south of Gourock, the Inverclyde Royal Hospital serves a population of around 125,000 in the urban and rural areas of Inverclyde, Largs, Bute and the Cowal Peninsula. Comprising an immense and somewhat austere block, which dominates the area, the hospital opened in 1979, replacing the former Greenock Royal Infirmary.
Inverclyde Royal provides a range of services including medical and surgical specialties, haematology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and accident & emergency facilities. The Larkfield Unit, which was opened by the Princess Royal in 2002, provides mental health and psychiatric services, while the status of the Rankin Maternity Unit was controversially downgraded in 2003.
