A remote estate and nature reserve owned by the John Muir Trust, the Sandwood Estate extends to 4650 ha (11,000 acres) in the North West Highlands, 9 miles (14.5 km) south southwest of Cape Wrath. Acquired by the Trust in 1993, Sandwood is noted for its glacially-eroded peatland landscape, dynamic sand dunes and dramatic cliffs. The estate includes the crofting townships and grazings of Droman, Oldshorebeg, Oldshoremore and Sheigra, together with the small settlements of Blairmore and Balchrick. It also includes parts of two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and a Special Area of Conservation that extends to 444 ha (1097 acres) and encompasses Sandwood Bay, the coastal cliffs to the south and the machair at Sheigra, Oldshore Beg and Oldshoremore.
