Alladale & Deanich Estate

An 10,900-ha (26,900-acre) estate encompassing Glen Alladale and much of Glen Mor in Easter Ross, Alladale and Deanich is located 10 miles (16 km) west of Ardgay. The estate came to prominence after it was purchased in 2003 by Paul Lister, son of a founder of MFI, the flat-pack furniture empire. His enthusiasm to create Europe's first wild nature reserve and reintroduce a series of lost animal species, from red squirrel to wild-boar, beaver, elk and wolves featured in the BBC television series The Real Monarch of the Glen in 2008. He also intends to plant natural plant species including pine, juniper, hazel and birch to join up the fragmented remnants of Caledonian forest remaining in Glen Alladale and protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Alladale Lodge dates from 1877 but has been refurbished to a high standard to form a luxury getaway for paying visitors, while the remote Deanich Lodge is a fine example of a traditional hunting lodge.
