Assynt Visitor Centre

Located in the centre of Lochinver, the Assynt Visitor Centre serves as a tourist information, and environment and cultural interpretation centre for the surrounding area. The centre was opened in 1995 by author and broadcaster Magnus Magnusson (1929 - 2007) in his role as Chairman of Scottish Natural Heritage. A substantial exhibition area features displays on the flora and fauna of the Assynt region, the history of the area including the Clearances and the tradition of crofting, together with the spectacular mountain landscapes and remarkable local geology (featured in conjunction with the North West Highlands Geopark). The main rock types of the area form huge boulders in front of the centre, including Lewisian Gneiss - the oldest rock in Britain, and one of the oldest in the world at around 3000 million years of age.
