West Sands

A broad sandy beach on the south shore of the Eden Estuary in Fife, the West Sands extends for 1½ miles (2.5 km) north northwest from St Andrews. The sands provide a popular beach for tourists, local residents and students, while St Andrew's famous golf courses occupy the Links behind, separated by a narrow line of dunes. The West Sands featured in the opening and closing scenes of the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, which told the story of the competition between athletes Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, although the beach was said to be Broadstairs in Kent.
