A ruined castle on the S bank of the Fruin Water, Bannachra Castle is located a mile (1.5 km) west of Arden. Once comprising a substantial three-storey structure, including a barrel-vaulted basement, a main or hall floor and an attic floor, the castle is rectangular in plan and approximately 14m (46 feet) in length and 7.3m (24 feet) wide. The lands here were once the property of the Galbraiths, but passed to the Colquhoun family who were most-likely responsible for building the castle around 1512. In 1592, its owner Sir Humphrey Colquhoun was murdered on the orders of the MacGregors. A treacherous servant is said to have lit an open window and Colquhoun was shot by an arrow through it on his way to bed.
