Old Town Wall

Forming part of the W boundary of Eastgate Car Park (formerly railway yards), this represents part of the wall which once protected the burgh of Peebles in the Scottish Borders. Dating from 1574, this isolated section includes a small circular tower and a pair of cannon ports. The wall had enclosed the New Town of Peebles only, linking the Eastgate, Northgate and Bridgegate, and was once 4.2m (13¾ feet) in height, but is now much reduced. It was well-maintained until the early 18th C., but by the end of that century had mostly been taken down to make was for an expanding burgh.
