Peebles Mercat Cross

A recasting of a Mercat Cross dating from the 15th century, but only the shaft is original. Now located at the western end of the Eastgate of Peebles, the cross had been taken down in 1807 and erected in the courtyard of the Chambers Institution fifty years later. It was returned to its original position in 1895 and placed on a new pedestal. It was moved to its current location - a short distance to the east - by architect Schomberg Scott in 1964-65. Decorated with various shields and arms, it is surmounted by a cubic sundial (1699) and a weather-vane (1662).
